Continuing my search for space efficient bondage furniture I eventually lucked out and came across this unique "S&M Bondage Furniture" modular system. Despite all my internet porn skills I had not seen it anywhere else before thus consider it to be a bit of a hidden gem.
I will mostly be showing the SM Cube platform, but the system also has Plate (Pentagon) and Tower core platform designs available. Not stopping there, the great variety of parts that are available allowing one to alter a platform to suit their needs is what really makes the system shine. Utilizing stainless steel tubes to go in the bases they interface with mostly wood based attachments to make quite the adult BDSM Tinker Toy set promoting creativity and flexibility.
I chose the Cube as it appeared to be a good size for what I was looking for and would be able to utilize the most parts from the SM system. The main Cube platform interestingly is very similar to my custom floor panel design I did with Saxon, however hence the Cube name takes the idea immensely further into the 3rd dimension. It offers the floor restraint and padding options I was looking for while having a whole upper frame to offer a greatly expanded set of connection point options. Since I was already very happy with my Dungeon Bed, the hope was the SM-Cube would cover all the rest of the bondage options I was interested in, yet just taking up a corner of the room rather than needing 4+ more pieces of specific bondage furniture.
The base Cube platform consists of 2 main pieces with 2 long side parts that connect it all together and tighten down the side pole slots, where 4 slots are offered on each connected side. Appox dimensions: L 128cm x W 119cm x H 7cm(no pads) 11cm(with pads). There are dual pole slots down the middle as well (8 positions x 2) That are tightened by a screw on the other sides (I'll just refer to as front and back) of the main platform. The sides tighten up in a fairly direct fashion with hex screws and washers while the center channel is a little more unique where a central lower base plate is moved as the adjustment screw is tightened, causing tension on all the center pole slots.
Modular Pads are a package option with 4 big panels for the sides and 4 smaller pads down the middle. They plop in with IKEA like dowels on the back of each panel which stay in place better than expected. The padding helps any sort of kneeling positions greatly so not causing unintended pain. Having them modular is not only a necessity to access the center pole slots, but a nice option where they can be removed if worried about damaging them with something like sexy high heels. Offhand I got the pads in "SkyLeather", their leather synthetic as they cost less and likely will be more durable, but they do offer genuine leather versions as well.
Down the middle in line with the central tube slots are additional screw slots that allow eyebolt O-rings to be attached which are even included. These come in quite handy expanding tie-down points down the middle. On the subject of tie downs, it appeared on the site pictures that there are 5 on each side, however I was pretty surprised I ended up without any. When asked what the hell happened, they said the manufacturer took them off since some folks were tearing them out during heavy play. This was a pretty big deal to me as I see the side tie down points crucial to planned functionality so I ended up getting my own stainless steel O-ring mounts and installing them. It was a lot of unplanned work, but I am happy with the result and the theory is they should be more durable since install with 4 screws each while the original loops installed with 2. For good news for others, Liberatorshop advises they will make sure side connection points are available for future buyers.
Luckily I inquired about a package option to see many additional parts not shown on the site. Customer service was great putting up with all my questions (I had plenty since a big investment) and showing what all was available. Seeing a nice example, I got a cube package version with Winches and Top Bar Large upgrade. The default cube comes with more simplistic bars up top while the upgrade winch compatible version has 4 pulleys integrated. This allows the Winch cables to be routed in a dual wire configuration or one can even take off one of the wires to run just one down the center pulley. For setup notes it was nice the cables come pre installed in the dual wire configuration and after noticing the Winches should be on a specific side of the Top Bars, installation was overall easy. I haven't used winches much offhand, but they were intuitive to figure out how the direction / stop level worked. While having to fuss with the wires to get them to wrap around the Winch correctly I soon found out it is good to have some sort of weight on the cable ends. Without any weight giving tension on the cable ends the wires will get all messed up in the winch and in general want to go flying off the pulleys. Fortunately an easy fix is to just always keep some heavy carabiners on the ends, yet worth noting the end loops aren't super big so I like to add some larger screw on quick links to make holding larger hardware possible. So far I've been using Quick Links (Screw Type) from Home Depot in the 5/16" wire size, a little under 3" in total length.
As a plus the front/back pulley top bars have screw slots to allow installing of included eyebolts. The are 3 positions on both interior and exterior sides to really expand the tie down point options. I found adding my own washers to these eyebolts allowed a little better control of the screw down "timing" to get the rotation where I wanted it while being in snug. The top bars on the cube sides are more simplistic, but do have 3 large tie down rings each. They don't spin and suffer from the timing issue so I wish they ended up all facing the same way. Currently it is a bit of a visual con, however not a deal breaker. If I get motivated I may try adding some gaskets to see if I can get the snug rotations more even. Extra parts are included to allow the pulley top bars to be used on their own (mounted to just 2 tubes) so one can set them up in a different position or just have a more minimal setup. Although nice that is a possibility, I must say I do like the stability of having the default 4 main corners cube setup now that I have all the main parts I'm interested in. Before I forget, one gets to pick the length of the main long tubes to make sure it fits in the desired space. One will generally want them as high as possible, but will want to be around 15cm shorter than the ceiling height so one can assemble the cube without issues. The main consideration is having enough clearance to be able to get the Top Bars onto the tubes. If in a height issue jam, one might be able to go taller with the tubes if prepared to put on the top bars by connecting one top side coming in from the side rather than from above, then rotating the other top side into proper tube placement. This method likely will take a little tube flexing and generally be a 2 person job so is more of a backup plan than a go to plan.
Still getting surprises I noticed there was no middle top bar on the version I got vs what I saw in the product pictures. The main explanation I got was that it was a design change and I had the latest version. Additionally it was not a part I could just add-on supposedly, so I'm just going to guess maybe some people were playing hard and it was decided it was a weak point. It wasn't critical to my plans, but I do miss the idea of having the central upper tie-down point. As a work around, on my second parts shipment I got some additional long tubes and the SM Topbar Small to offer at least some form of central upper connection options. Being a little worried about leaning on long tubes in the middle like that, fortunately I found out adapter pieces were available so I can connect the 2 central long tubes to an SM Cross Bar to offer more reinforcement. I'm glad I thought of it and that it was available as it makes a noticeable difference.
Fortunately some changes were for the better as seen on the pillory pieces. I was pleasantly surprised to see the new large pillory mounts had a more flexible mounting system that rotates, rather than the old style being 90 degree positions only. The smaller Head Locker pillory also appears to have a more flexible closure now using the peg system where it used to just be locked in one position. With the peg hole variety it lets one size the pillory closure a little bit which I like to have just a little gap space so don't have to worry about skin pinching. Although the large pillories come in a standard hole size, the smaller Head Locker is custom and will be sized to your given measurements. As a note on the large pillories I show the full size Head and Hand Pillory along with the Hand and Feet Pillory, but they also make a reversible large pillory where it locks the head and hands one way, then the pieces can be rotated to lock hands and feet. A good option if going to only have one pillory part.
For my first order I went pretty big on extra parts but not full on crazy as I knew I likely would have different or new ideas after using the system a little. It arrived in a big custom plywood / chipboard crate with items well wrapped in foam sheets. Overall everything made it in good shape with just some abrasion marks on one of the top bars. Since it wouldn't be in view it didn't seem like anything worth starting a fuss over. With everything finally unwrapped and laid out, first time construction went well with the system generally being intuitive. The main Cube parts fasten with hex screws + washers, and although a hex wrench is included you will definitely want to setup a power drill with the 6mm hex to speed things up quite a bit. Unless you are super tall, a 3+ step stool ladder is also highly recommended for construction and configuring the upper parts of the Cube.
For fastening the other parts, most used washers and star knobs in M8 or M10 size or spring rotating handles in M10 size. As a preference thing my SM Cross Bar sets came with rotating handles which I find they end up banging into other parts while rotating more than they are easier to turn so I prefer the star knobs. Luckily on my second order they were able to hook me up with star knob replacements and used them on the new attachments per request. On the first few setups I wouldn't say the system is difficult, but it can be a bit slow. Some parts are going to be easier than others and for me the Cross Bars are an example of one of the more tricky parts. The tolerances are pretty tight as the system utilizes a concept where the wood parts tightly fit and will lock up secure on the tubes when force is applied. I thus found that for slide on parts a gentle touch got better results, along with some twisting on the poles can help. Like many things after practice I was able to adjust the Cube configuration much faster, but big changes are going to take time no matter what.
If on a budget, the core Cube pieces can be moved around to get some not normally obvious configurations, but as I was saying it can be a bit of a change hassle. Thus I find keeping the core cube shape a priority when possible and then just adding on from there. Although I originally got 2 SM Cross Bar sets, I found myself wishing I had more a lot while experimenting so went big on the second order and got 4 more SM Cross Bar sets. Along with the 2 extra long tubes I'm hoping that should cover all my needs for position ideas and reinforcement.
I've got a pretty good pile of additional parts so thought I'd give a list format of some quick highlight notes about them:
SM Cross Bar x 6: Pretty critical pieces that offer mounting points for other parts. It is nice the mounts include tie-down loops. These bars can also be used for bondage themselves or to reinforce setups.
SM Long Tubes - 1 pair: The cube comes with 4, but I got an extra pair to experiment with having a tall center zone in the middle of the Cube. I got them sized so I can use them on the sides as well without bumping into the Top Bars.
SM Topbar Small: I got to help secure the center long tubes up top and also add a pulley connection point. Not sure why the pulley is plastic, but otherwise does what I hoped of it.
SM Furniture Module Pad XL: Works nice as intended to add some lean-on padding when using central tube positions.
SM Variboard: Got to allow a laying down or leaning platform. Although it requires some cross bars to mount to, it can be quite versatile hence the name. As a plus it comes with many loop attachment points by default and slots to allow straps to be used.
SM Spanking Horse (has 4 tubes): A solid Horse style platform for leaning over or straddling. It appears the Cube version uses 4 short tubes included, which is nice for support, but can only be mounted 1 way. It would be nice to mount with 90 degree rotation sometimes. This horse is also useful just laid down to sit on. I wish they didn't do the decorative silver nailheads which gives a dated look compared to the modern look of the rest of the SM system.
SM Parrot Stick: Used to add a spreader / bondage bar to central tubes. Is about 60cm long and nice that the ends have screw points to add included eyebolts with O-rings.
SM Cross Attachment - special 1 meter size: Basically a longer version of the Parrot Stick, Normally 180cm long, I got this 1 meter size since I saw it on the tower version and was the size I wanted.
SM Bar Attachment Adapter / Tube support connection: It can be a bit tricky to put on since a slide on piece, but allows central tubes to connect to a cross bar. Purchased to add reinforcement when using long central tubes, however can be used on some other parts as well.
SM Vibrator Holder: A bit bulky, but position adjustable to hold a vibrator connecting to central tubes. I didn't find out till I got it that it is pretty specifically made to fit a Fairy vibrator, yet fortunately I can fit my old Acuvibe in the holder as well.
SM Open Seat Posts: Normally a Tower part, these will mount to central tubes offering a nice option to offset a little weight and generally keep the crotch exposed.
SM Head and Hand Locker / Pillory: Full size version made to specifically hold a head and 2 hands. Secures using included metal pegs and keeper pins. Mounts allow rotation with one side rotating freely and the other side uses a spring loaded peg. Appears to have 28 positions so offers rotation spots in about 13 degree increments. Sometimes it can be a little difficult to pull the spring peg out enough to rotate where it ends up being a 2 handed process, but understandable it is not something you want to accidentally slip. If one wanted to use locks instead of keeper pins, one could likely drill out the holes to be a little bigger on the metal pegs.
SM Hand and Feet Locker / Pillory: A similar full size pillory made specifically to hold 2 hands and 2 feet.
SM Head Locker / Pillory: A Pillory specific for just locking a head, I got the dual mount that allows attachment to 2 central tubes or a cross tube. Using the same peg securing system as the large pillories, it does sport some extras having mount holes for eyebolt O-rings and an addon slot for an adjustable gag piece.
SM Adjustable Sitting Platform: A versatile platform that can be used to sit on and expose the crotch area or adjust to close the gap making the platform more comfortable to sit on or be bent over. Comes with side mounts that allow placement to slide into the desired location and locked down, however is somewhat odd the mounts are not long enough to secure onto a Cube side with tubes just in the corners. One must use additional tubes or change the tube location to be 3 tube slots long instead of 4. I'll guess the shorter size is for weight rating purposes.
There are many more great attachments, these are just the ones I've gotten so far. The cost can certainly add up when one gets a big pile like I did, but I am happy with the main space footprint and the modularity really sets the SM system apart from anything similar. The closest comparisons I've seen come off more looking like re-purposed exercise equipment while the SM Cube looks much more clean and purpose built to me at least. To deal with the extra parts not in use I got a storage ottoman that helps a lot while still being useful in the room, however large and overflow items have ended up in the closest or nearby play zone corners. None the less I think a fair balance where the parts not in use are much easier to tuck away than a big specific piece of bondage furniture. Not to be overlooked by the logistical details, the big SM System plus is definitely the flexibility to come up with all kinds of positions and situations. Most of the parts can go in many places instead of just 1 specific place allowing all kinds of fun combinations not normally available on a couple pieces of furniture. With multiple platforms offered in the S&M Bondage Furniture System there will be a good fit for various sized play spaces and since many parts are interchangable it promotes having more than one platform if one decides to scale up later.
Due to this unique set of features it makes SM System worth checking out for personal play spaces and full on dungeons alike. We tried to give a starter pile of example use pics, but keep coming back as we'll try and update with more as the possibilities are near endless!
